Provisional visitor arrivals for this month (7,569) increased by 3.8% when compared to last month (7,295) and a slight increase of 0.4% when compared to this time last year (7,539).

New Zealand had the highest tourist numbers with 74.5% of the total visitor arrivals followed by Europe with 9.4% and Australia with 9.0%.

Of this month’s visitor arrivals, 83.8% came for vacation, 7.8% came to visit friends and relatives while 8.4% had other reasons for visiting our shores. 75.6% of the visitor arrivals were accommodated in hotels and motels while 11.2% were accommodated in private accommodations.

Total resident departures for this month (891) decreased by 25.0% when compared to last month (1,188) with a net inward migration of 62 persons. Of those departing residents 44.3% went to visit their friends or relatives, while 55.7% left the country for other reasons.
