09 June 2008: Wohoo! The 12 weeks Vaevae Challenge 2008 is on and this time around
everyone at CISO have joined this walking challenge. The challenge is about getting teams moving
for at least 30 minutes a day and while doing so having fun.
Statistics Office fielded two six-member teams namely the “The Speedo Meters” and “Stat-It-Is”. Go figure with the CISO team names but prizes up for grabs include Best Team Names and Best Team Photo. Last year the five member team “ACMEA” from CISO won the Best Team Photo Prize.
This year’s challenge kicked off with the Women in Sport - Gold Coin Walk for Prostate Cancer
earning bonus points for those who went on the walk.
They welcome the rest of the staff to join them on any of their lunch walks.
It’s now the fifth week of the Challenge, the walk has been fun and is an activity to look forward to everyday. From this week onwards bonus points are earned for each person accompanying any member of the team on their daily walks.
For a “Stat-It-Is” team member it’s been walks with a range of walking buddies from within her household. For most of the last two weeks, she has her two little ones and the family dogs accompanying her on the long distance walks. When using the hill on the back road near her home she not only has her usual walking buddies, believe it or not, she also has the family cat keeping pace with them as they walk up and down the little hill at least five times in a day’s session.
The challenge is also a case of “static-it-is” on some days with no walking, and then it’s a matter of making up for it the next day”. So far it’s been about trying to make it a habit to be active at least 30 minutes, “just 30 minutes a day” as they say in the catchy Public Health ads on TV.
