Cook Islands Population Profile

This report provides a brief demographic profile for Cook Islands planners and policy-makers, an analysis of the 1996 census report and some information on Cook Islanders living in New Zealand based on the 1996 New Zealand Census.

The aim of this profile is to provide an overview of some of the demographic features of the population of the Cook Islands. The emphasis is on identifying the key implications for planners and policy-makers of observed demographic levels and trends.

This report presents the demographic, social and economic characteristics of the Cook Islands. It provides a measure of our country's development at a particular point in its national history and shows its development over time.

This profile is mainly based on the results of the 1996 Cook Islands Census and data provided by the Cook Islands Statistics Office. It was prepared by Mr Andreas Demmke and would have not been possible without the dedication and hard work of the Cook Islands Statistics Office staff. Contributions were also made by other members of SPC's Demography/Population Programme.
