Consumer Price Index

MARCH QUARTER 2010



The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for March quarter 2010 was 115.2, down by 2.7% over December quarter 2009. Similarly the “underlying CPI” decreased at a rate of 2.9% over December quarter of 2009 and and it continued to decline by 0.01% over March quarter 2009.

The most significant contributions to the movement in the CPI are highlighted as follows:

    Transport group recorded the most significant decline of 10.1% in this quarter.  This is mainly driven by the decrease in prices of overseas airfares (down by 33.3%) and motor cycle prices with a downward trend of 6.7% and 5.9% respectively.

    Household Operation group also showed major decrease of 6.7% over the quarter: A decrease of 16.1% in the price of electricity was the main contributor to the decline.

    Minor increases were noted in Food, Housing and Miscellaneous groups with 1.0%, 0.6% and 0.6% respectively.
